Mephisto and Faust
In front of Auerbachs Keller, there is a statue that depicts a scene from Goethe's "Faust." The poet himself frequented this restaurant. Perform a short dialogue between Faust and Mephisto from the play in front of the statue.
Faust: ...What meaning do you find in this hollow, lifeless stone?
Mephisto: Just what you bring to it. You see a he-goat, I see a dear friend.
Faust: Is that all?
Mephisto: Why not? Does not this legend give us both a secret token of brotherhood?
Faust: How so?
Mephisto: Look closer at the inscription on the base. What does it say?
Faust: "Erstarrte Furcht gibt nachher keine Stimme mehr." ["Frozen fear gives no voice to the future."].
